WelcomeThe Human Kinetics Not Your Average Joe 5K/5Mi will be Saturday, May 11, 2013For 21 years Human Kinetics has organized the Twin Cities Twosome, a 5K run/walk to benefit local charities, and now the race will get a new name and a new format. On Saturday, May 11, at 9 a.m., Human Kinetics will host the Human Kinetics Not Your Average Joe 5K/5Mi at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. The new name celebrates the life of Joe Seeley, a former Human Kinetics employee who died of leukemia last year. Seeley devoted considerable time and energy to the annual charity race and to the Champaign-Urbana running community.
The 2013 race will also feature a new format, which will include the addition of a 5-mile run and eliminate the “twosome” format that allowed two-person teams to complete a 2 X 5K relay run or 2 X 2.5K relay walk. The new format also introduces a new division of age groups in the 5K run and 5 mile run events. The new age groups will include 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over. The 5K walk divisions include 18 and under, 19 to 40, 41 to 55, and 56 and over.At last year’s race, Human Kinetics was able to contribute $12,000 to the three benefitting charities: Center for Women in Transition, The Crisis Nursery, and the T.I.M.E.S. Center. The race draws plenty of praise from participants for its organization. Don Dodsson, the News-Gazette business writer, has participated in many races over the years and said he "likes to talk it up with his friends because it is such a good event." Over its 21-year history, the race has raised nearly $125,000. Packet Pick Up is Friday, May 10 from noon to 6:00 pm at Human Kinetics, 1607 N. Market Street, Champaign or on Race Day (May 11) from 7:30 to 8:30 am at the Pavilion at Crystal Lake Park, Urbana.
